Blessingways - Mother Blessing
The original ceremonies
The original ceremonies
Blessingway is a central ceremony of a complex system of Navajo (native American) healing ceremonies known as sings, or chants, that are designed to restore equilibrium to the cosmos.
There are six major ceremonies: the Blessingways, Holyways, Lifeways, Evilways, War Ceremonials, and Gameways.
Parts of the general Blessingway, especially the songs, are included in most Navajo ceremonies. Unlike the other healing ceremonies, the Blessingways are not intended to cure illness but are used to invoke positive blessings and to avert misfortune.
The Blessingway is comparatively short, lasting only two nights, and is often part of longer rites. Among other things, it is performed to bless and protect the home, to prevent complications of pregnancy, and to enhance the good fortune that attendees and participants hope to foster through the kinaalda (girl’s puberty rites). As a part of Navajo religious practices, the Blessingway is considered to be a highly spiritual, sacred, and private event.

The pregnancy ceremony - Blessingways
There is a special Blessingway ceremony, which celebrates a woman’s rite of passage into motherhood which is normally performed after week 20. It is also called a Mother Blessing out of respect of the Navajo tradition, especially because the Navajo people don’t approve of the name Blessingways being used this way.
The Navajo have a saying, "whatever happens here on Earth must first be dreamed", and that's exactly what a Mother Blessing does. It is a ceremony (or the "dream") that is a prelude to a major life event (and, as we all know, motherhood is a pretty life-altering event).
Why a Mother Blessing?
A Mother Blessing is all about nurturing the mother, and filling her cup so it overflows with love, empowerment and confidence as she awaits the birth of her baby. A woman who is given lots of empowerment has more strength and love to give in return.
A Mother Blessing is a beautiful and unique way to honour a mother-to-be, spending time with her, sharing stories, removing fears and to instill confidence and strength
What happens during a Mother Blessing?
A Mother Blessing involves a gathering of the mother-to-be’s most trusted friends and family, who sit in the power of a circle and share amongst one another. Traditionally it is a woman-only gathering and may include her mother, sisters, aunts, daughters, best of friends, mentors — anyone she respects, looks up to or values.
Unlike a traditional baby shower, where gifts are purchased for the baby, a Mother Blessing is all about nurturing the mother-to-be and celebrating motherhood.
A Mother Blessing helps the woman to prepare herself for the birth, emotionally, spiritually and mentally, for the all important role of a new mother. She feels ‘held’ and supported by those she loves and respects — a great way to help her release any blockages she may be feeling and to allow her to embrace what’s to come.
The Mother Blessing can have many different elements.
There are rituals associated with the ceremony, including creating a birthing bracelets for mother & baby, hair brushing, foot washing, sage burning, sharing birth stories, passing on blessings and good wishes, giving gifts and feasting on potluck fare.
The guest of honour can pick and choose what activities appeal to her. Guests can bring either handmade gifts, or inexpensive store-bought personal gifts for the mother.
Sage is burned at the beginning of the Mother Blessing to bless the woman's house (for either a homebirth, or for after the baby is brought home from the hospital). The mother can have her hair brushed or braided with flowers by her sister or mother (or, in lieu of their presence, by friends).
A lovely sentiment is to share positive and empowering birthing experiences while brushing the mothers hair. If her midwife or Doula is there, she may wash the honouree's feet in a warm bath filled with herbs or flowers.
A Mother Blessing can be very affirming, empowering and uplifting. It doesn’t matter what religion (if any) the mother is —
a Mother Blessing honours all belief systems.
What else can be done?
Here are some rituals that can be incorporated in a Mother Blessing:
- making a belly cast during the ceremony for the mother to decorate it and bond with the baby through this exercise
- or making the belly cast beforehand and having guests decorate it
- Henna painting for the mom's belly and photographing it
- passing around a newborn blanket for each guest to paint on or to embroider
